Ecommerce question

I’ve been in the ecommerce field for quite some time now – there are more than 3 years since my first shopping cart type of website. During all this time I worked on so many than I truly lost count.
But there’s something that they all have in common: they were built having the same shopping cart software foundation – an osCommerce based solution. I cannot say that it’s the best one, but it worked out pretty good for me so far.

The years have passed and now there’s another type of solution trying to make room. A friend of mine asked me the other day a trick question:

“Which is better – to have a shopping cart installed on my server or use a hosted ecommerce software (Ashop for example)?”

While I don’t know anything about the one that he suggested, from my point of view, I would say the first one since it allows me to make all the changes that I want, although it might me a little more expensive in the beginning.

But that’s me… and I would love to hear your thoughts on this one!

osCommerce is as bad a software as they come. I think your best bet would be to make your own cart (which is what I do), or use a real cart, like Magento.

I didn’t hear about Magento before, so I checked it a little bit. Although it has some good things, it still lacks maturity! The same goes for any other “I made it” solution.
Instead, osCommerce has been around for several years and, more important, has gathered a large community of programmers around it.

In the end, it really depends on the way you are looking at this matter - from your programmer point of view osCommerce might be a bad choice, but I can tell you that from a store owner it’s quite the opposite.
..or maybe it’s just mine! :)
